President Donald Trump welcomed Inter Miami CF, champions of the 2025 Major League Soccer Cup, to the White House. Trump praised Lionel Messi, calling him one of the greatest players to ever compete, and highlighted his ability to win under immense pressure.
"Leo, you came in and you won, and that’s something very hard to, very unusual," Trump stated. He noted that many highly-paid stars arrive with fanfare but fail to deliver, contrasting them with Messi's immediate success.
Trump mentioned his son Barron's excitement about Messi's visit, acknowledging the soccer star's significant fan base. The President also alluded to a comparison between Messi and Brazilian legend Pelé, with the room favoring Messi. He recognized Messi's crucial role in Inter Miami's championship season, citing his 29 goals and 16 assists in 28 matches.
Inter Miami owners Jorge and Jose Mas were present, along with co-owner David Beckham. The team presented Trump with a custom pink Inter Miami jersey. Messi and many of his teammates are preparing for the upcoming World Cup, hosted by the U.S., Mexico, and Canada. Messi is a decorated player with multiple titles, including the World Cup and eight Ballon d’Or awards.
