Shortstop Trevor Story has voiced concerns regarding the Boston Red Sox's organizational direction following the unexpected firing of manager Alex Cora and five other coaching staff members. The dismissals came amid a disappointing start to the 2026 MLB season.
Story reportedly found the explanation from Red Sox management insufficient and plans further discussions with general manager Craig Breslow. "It’s up in the air what the true direction of the franchise is," Story stated. "If this shows us anything, it’s we’re here to play baseball, and that’s it."
General Manager Craig Breslow addressed the changes, stating the move provides a "fresh start" with "135 games ahead of us." The team parted ways with Cora, who led them to a World Series title in 2018, along with hitting coaches, third-base coach Kyle Hudson, bench coach Ramón Vázquez, and hitting strategy coach Joe Cronin. Jason Varitek has been reassigned from his coaching role. Chad Tracy will serve as interim manager. Despite the firings, the team held a 10-17 record entering Sunday's games.
The firings occurred the day after the Red Sox achieved their largest win of the season, a 17-1 victory over the Baltimore Orioles.
