President Donald Trump announced during his State of the Union address that the gold-medal-winning United States women’s ice hockey team will visit the White House.

"They beat a fantastic Canadian team in overtime as everybody saw, as did the American women who will soon be coming to the White House," Trump stated.

The team had previously declined an invitation to attend the State of the Union address, citing prior academic and professional commitments.

The announcement follows the team's victory over Canada in Milan.

USA Hockey and the White House have not immediately commented on the team's acceptance of the White House visit.

President Trump also announced that men's hockey goalie Connor Hellebuyck would receive the Medal of Freedom for his performance in the men's team's overtime victory.
