Vancouver Whitecaps striker Brian White finally broke through New York City FC's defense in the 87th minute, scoring a header for his sixth goal of the season to secure a 2-0 victory. Winger Bruno Caicedo provided the assist with a pass into the six-yard box.
White, who led the team with seven shots on target, emphasized the importance of persistence. "The mentality is just keep going," White stated. "Fortunately, Bruno put a really good ball in and finally got that goal."
Whitecaps head coach Jesper Sorensen praised White's evolving skill set, noting his increased dynamism in creating scoring chances and his composure. Mathias Laborda scored the opening goal for Vancouver just before halftime from a free kick. Goalkeeper Matt Freese made eight saves for NYC FC, while Yohei Takaoka recorded two saves for his fourth clean sheet.
The win propelled the Whitecaps to the top of the Western Conference standings.
