The Washington Wizards are under fire after an April Fools’ Day prank involving a staged half-court shot went wrong.
During their game against the Philadelphia 76ers, a blindfolded fan attempted a long-range shot believed to be for a cash prize. The crowd, announcers, and mascots celebrated - until a replay revealed the ball fell well short.
The fan, initially shown celebrating with a giant check, was later informed it was all part of a scripted skit. The Wizards offered him an autographed jersey and future tickets as consolation.
Backlash grew quickly online, prompting the team to issue an apology, admitting they "missed the mark" by misleading fans.
“We apologize for last night's April Fools' joke that left many wondering if we had misled the fan,” the team said in a statement. “All participants were in on the joke, but we missed the mark.”
On the court, the Wizards lost their fourth consecutive game, falling 153-131 to the 76ers, further distancing themselves from playoff contention.
