The model wars are over. The new battle is for the 'agentic control plane' - the layer that will govern and orchestrate enterprise AI agents. At Google Cloud Next 2026, Google made its move.
The company unveiled the Gemini Enterprise Agent Platform, a full-stack bet that combines its leading frontier model, custom Tensor Processing Units (TPUs), and an open, heterogeneous ecosystem. This vertical integration gives Google a structural cost advantage, as it avoids the high margins paid to third-party silicon vendors like Nvidia. The new TPUs posted 2.7x and 5x improvements in price-to-performance for training and inference, respectively.
But governance, not economics, is the emerging challenge. All three major cloud providers only announced agent registries in April 2026, highlighting how nascent the foundational blocks are. According to analysts, the path forward lies in separating models from control planes and data layers, using open lakehouse formats and aggregated data feeds to let AI consume context freely across clouds.
The message: commit to the platform, and you're in. The risk is moving too fast or too slow. But those who embrace the change will come out winners.
