Google is pushing Android Automotive OS deeper into car systems with a new version designed for software-defined vehicles. The upgrade moves beyond infotainment, targeting core vehicle functions like remote climate control and digital key integration.

Automakers have historically guarded their onboard software due to safety concerns and data value, leading to fragmented tech stacks. Google argues its enhanced Android Automotive OS can standardize vehicle software across brands and suppliers.

The company previously shifted focus from phone-based Android Auto to embedded Android Automotive OS, which runs natively in cars. This evolution positions Google as a central platform provider in the growing software-defined vehicle market.
