Tata Consultancy Services Chairman N Chandrasekaran predicts a future where IT companies employ an equal number of AI agents and human staff. Speaking at the annual general meeting, Chandrasekaran said TCS does not plan layoffs but will slow hiring as AI automates tasks currently done by people.
"If the company has half a million employees, the day is not far when the company will have half a million AI agents," he stated, emphasizing these agents will work alongside humans.
India's $500 billion IT sector faces investor unease that AI could disrupt its traditional labor-intensive model. Chandrasekaran acknowledged new roles will emerge as companies adapt to AI-driven operations, but warned that some work will inevitably shift to AI agents during this transition.
