The tech industry is undergoing a seismic shift. Coding expertise is no longer the gatekeeper to innovation. Amjad Masad, CEO and co-founder of Replit, argues that AI is democratizing software development, enabling non-coders to launch apps and businesses faster than ever.
Masad, who previously led JavaScript infrastructure at Facebook and built tools like Babel and Jest, turned down a $1 billion acquisition offer to advance AI-driven development. He claims automation has made traditional coding nearly obsolete. "Code is almost fully automated," he said. "For the most part, people are not coding anymore."
This transformation gives non-technical entrepreneurs an edge. Without being bogged down by syntax, they can focus on market needs and rapid iteration. With AI tools, most users can build a functional app within hours. The core skill now? Idea generation.
"The cost of implementing ideas is going down rapidly; it’s gonna go to zero at some point," Masad stated. As execution becomes trivial, creativity becomes king. Even traits dismissed by older generations-like hyperfocus or digital fluency-are now strategic advantages.
Established tech companies resist this democratization, but the momentum is building. Education, one of the hardest markets, is already seeing disruption as AI builds grading and assignment tools for teachers-fueling Replit’s path to $250 million in annual revenue.
