AI company Anthropic PBC has announced progress in its dispute with the Pentagon over its artificial intelligence models. CEO Dario Amodei stated the company is engaged in "productive conversations" with defense officials.
Last June, Anthropic secured a contract to supply AI models to the Pentagon. However, the company's stance against using its software for domestic surveillance or autonomous weapons led to an order by former President Trump to halt its use by federal agencies.
Pentagon officials recently designated Anthropic as a supply chain risk, a move that limits how U.S. military suppliers can utilize the company's products. Amodei indicated this designation will not significantly impact most Claude users or business relationships unrelated to specific Pentagon contracts.
Despite ongoing dialogue, Anthropic intends to challenge the supply chain risk designation in court, arguing it is legally unsound and sets a concerning precedent for government contractors.
Amodei also addressed an internal memo where he suggested the dispute stemmed from his refusal to offer "dictator-style praise to Trump." He also noted a contract between rival OpenAI and the Pentagon shortly after Anthropic's designation.
Anthropic is working with defense officials to find compliant ways to continue collaboration and prepare for potential phase-outs from public sector networks, as federal agencies have been given six months to find alternative AI providers.
