The US government has authorized Anthropic to release its powerful Claude Mythos 5 AI model to a select group of "trusted partners." This decision follows a Commerce Department order two weeks ago that suspended access to the model over fears it could be deployed by military intelligence in China, Russia, or other nations of concern.
According to a source, more than 100 companies and institutions, including many Fortune 500 firms, will now gain access. US Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick stated in a letter that an export license is no longer required for the Mythos 5 model for these approved entities and their foreign national employees.
"In just two weeks, we have worked diligently to ensure America remains the global leader in AI while safeguarding our security," a Commerce Department spokesperson said. The status of Anthropic's other advanced model, Fable 5, was not addressed, though the source indicated the government is moving toward allowing its release as well.
The situation underscores a complex relationship between the IPO-bound AI firm and the US government. Anthropic previously refused to allow its models for military surveillance and fully autonomous weapons, a stance that led to the government placing it on a national security blacklist.
