AI company Anthropic has filed a lawsuit against the US Department of Defense. The action follows the agency's recent designation of Anthropic as a supply chain risk, which mandates the cessation of its AI systems' use in department-related cases.

This designation by the Pentagon restricts companies from utilizing Anthropic's AI, including its Claude chatbot, particularly in sensitive military applications. The lawsuit seeks to overturn this label and prevent its enforcement by federal agencies. Anthropic asserts that the government cannot leverage its authority to penalize a company for exercising protected speech.

The Defense Department has declined to comment on the ongoing litigation. Anthropic has previously stated its intent to prevent its technology from being used for mass surveillance or fully autonomous weapons. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth and other officials have insisted on the company's compliance with all lawful uses of Claude.
