China has launched a national birth certificate system for humanoid robots, registering over 28,000 units across 200 models. Each robot receives a unique 29-character digital ID, tracking its entire lifecycle from production to disposal.
The platform, developed by Hubei province's Humanoid Robotics Innovation Center and overseen by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, collects real-time data on joint wear, battery status, AI training, and performance. Over 100 Chinese manufacturers have enrolled.
State media frames the system as essential for managing rapid sector growth and addressing liability and safety concerns. The system is fully centralized, mirroring China's citizen ID program, with no blockchain or decentralized components.
Investment in the sector reached $3.4 billion in early 2025. The registry covers robots used in factories, hospitals, elder care, and public spaces, including one that recently completed a Beijing half-marathon.
For investors, early compliance with these standards offers a competitive advantage, as registration becomes a de facto license to operate. The real-time performance data across 28,000 robots creates an unprecedented dataset for quality control and benchmarking.
