Europe took a significant step Friday towards outlawing artificial intelligence practices that generate child sexual abuse material. EU governments have proposed adding this provision to the bloc's AI rules, adopted two years ago.

This move comes as regulators globally are cracking down on sexually explicit content and deepfakes produced by AI, including those from Elon Musk's xAI chatbot Grok on X. Tech regulators and national watchdogs in Britain, Ireland, and Spain are currently investigating Grok's sexualized AI deepfakes.

The proposal requires backing from the European Parliament. Lawmakers are set to vote on a similar proposition next week. Negotiations between both sides on potential changes to the AI Act are expected to take about a year before implementation.
