A new GitHub plugin, Endless Toil, generates escalating human groans from AI coding agents as they process increasingly flawed code. The plugin, developed by Andrew Vos, runs alongside agents like Claude and Codex, providing real-time audio feedback on code quality, complexity, and maintainability. As the code becomes more problematic, the AI's groans become louder and more desperate, ranging from a soft whimper for minor issues to a full wail for severe problems.
This development taps into a growing trend of making technology emit distressed or uncomfortable sounds. Similar projects include nubmoan, which causes a ThinkPad's TrackPoint nub to moan when pressed, and SlapMac, an app that makes a MacBook scream when slapped. The concept extends to AI interactions, with past examples including jailbreaks that provoked moans from ChatGPT and tutorials on making AI visibly angry.
The "vibe coding" phenomenon, where developers create applications using AI, now has an "emotional tax." Endless Toil allows developers to audibly experience their AI's "suffering" on their behalf, with sound levels titled groan, wail, and abyss, presumably for the most challenging code. The plugin is compatible with Claude and Codex.
