Elon Musk lost his case against Sam Altman and OpenAI after a federal jury ruled Monday that he missed the legal deadline to bring his claims.
The verdict caps a three-week trial in which jurors cleared Altman, co-founder Greg Brockman, and OpenAI of all accusations. The jury also dismissed Musk’s claims against Microsoft, which he alleged aided OpenAI’s shift to a for-profit model.
Court testimony revealed OpenAI leaders discussed a for-profit conversion as early as 2017-two years before the company created a for-profit arm in 2019. Musk did not file his suit until 2024.
Musk testified he initially trusted Altman’s assurances but grew frustrated after Microsoft invested $10 billion in OpenAI in 2023, gaining intellectual property rights and a share of future profits.
