Freeform Future Corp., a startup specializing in custom 3D metal part production, has successfully closed a $67 million funding round. The investment was led by prominent entities including Nvidia Corp.'s NVentures and Boeing Co.'s AE Ventures.

Freeform 3D Metal Printer

Traditional metal component manufacturing often relies on CNC machines, which can be costly and time-consuming to set up, particularly for low-volume production. Freeform's approach utilizes advanced 3D printing technology as a more efficient and economical alternative. This method allows for rapid reconfiguration of production lines, leading to lower setup costs and reduced material waste compared to conventional methods.

The company's proprietary GoldenEye system employs 18 lasers to create parts from metal powder, integrating sensors to monitor and optimize the manufacturing workflow. This system addresses common 3D printing challenges, such as ensuring proper fusion of metal powder to prevent structural weaknesses and defects.

Instead of selling hardware, Freeform operates a dedicated 3D printing facility, producing parts for clients. This model eliminates the need for customers to invest in production lines and specialized staff.

The newly acquired capital will be used to enhance the GoldenEye system, with plans for a new iteration, codenamed Skyfall, featuring hundreds of lasers. This next-generation system is designed to produce thousands of kilograms of metal parts daily, significantly boosting Freeform's manufacturing capacity. The company also plans to expand its workforce by hiring up to 100 new employees.
