Angela Lipps, a 50-year-old grandmother from Tennessee, was arrested by U.S. Marshals in July 2025 for a bank fraud case in Fargo, North Dakota - a state she says she has never visited.
Police used facial recognition software to match surveillance images from the fraud to Lipps' driver's license and social media. She spent over five months in custody before the charges were dismissed.
Fargo Police now admit the investigation was incomplete. They have since adopted a formal policy for facial recognition technology.
Her attorney, Jay Greenwood, says the case shows the need for police to verify AI leads with other evidence. He called it a case that should never have happened.
