NEW DELHI - Eighty-six nations, including the United States and China, have jointly called for the development of "secure, trustworthy and robust" artificial intelligence. The declaration was issued Saturday following a major international summit.

The statement emphasizes that advancing AI responsibly is crucial for building trust and maximizing societal and economic benefits. While no concrete commitments were made, the declaration highlights voluntary initiatives, such as pooling international AI research capabilities.

This five-day event, the AI Impact Summit, focused on generative AI and marked the first time a developing nation hosted the global meeting. It drew tens of thousands of attendees, including prominent tech CEOs.

Key discussions at the summit included the societal advantages of multilingual AI translation, concerns over job displacement, and the significant energy demands of data centers. The declaration acknowledged the need for energy-efficient AI systems given growing resource requirements.

Participants also stressed the importance of understanding AI's potential security implications and the need for both industry-led voluntary measures and policy frameworks that foster innovation while safeguarding public interest.
