Instagram is introducing a new safety feature that will alert parents if their teenage children repeatedly search for content related to suicide and self-harm on the platform. These notifications will be sent via email, text, WhatsApp, or directly within the app.

This initiative aims to provide timely support to teens who may be in distress. The alerts are triggered by specific search terms and phrases indicating potential self-harm ideation. Instagram already blocks content that promotes or glorifies suicide and self-harm, directing users to support resources.

To receive these parental alerts, parental supervision must be enabled on the teen's Instagram account. This feature, available in the U.S., UK, Australia, and Canada, requires mutual consent and allows parents to monitor app usage, time limits, and content interactions.
