Japan's industry ministry has approved an additional 631.5 billion yen, approximately $3.96 billion, to accelerate research and development at chipmaker Rapidus. This move is part of a broader government strategy to boost domestic advanced semiconductor production and strengthen global chip supply chains.
With this latest allocation, Rapidus has received a total of 2.354 trillion yen for research and development. The ministry also confirmed support for semiconductor design projects from Fujitsu and IBM Japan through its subordinate organization, NEDO.
Rapidus is focused on developing next-generation 2-nanometer scale logic semiconductors, with mass production targeted for fiscal year 2027. This follows a previous investment round where the company secured approximately 160 billion yen from private companies, alongside planned government contributions.
