Singapore authorities are introducing specialized license plates for electric vehicles to enhance emergency response safety. The Land Transport Authority and Civil Defence Force will solicit public feedback on three green-themed designs starting this month.

These distinct markers aim to allow firefighters to instantly identify EVs during fire incidents, addressing unique battery risks. Second Minister for Home Affairs Edwin Tong noted that while EV fires are rare, they require different management approaches compared to internal combustion engines.

Implementation is expected by late 2026. Exemptions apply to motorcycles and hybrids due to lower battery risks. A decal sticker option is also under review for larger electric vehicles. Authorities will engage dealers and owners to finalize the approach.

EV adoption continues to surge in the region. By year-end last year, EVs comprised 7.4 percent of the total car population and accounted for 45 percent of all new registrations.
