Meta is consolidating its top software engineering talent into a new Applied AI (AAI) Engineering unit, established last month. This strategic move, detailed in an internal memo, involves mandatory transfers of engineers to prioritize the development of AI agents capable of autonomously building, testing, and shipping products.
Maher Saba, vice president of Reality Labs, leads the AAI organization. He stated that the company is "resourcing it by moving our strongest talent to address it," emphasizing that these transfers are not optional. This reorganization aligns with Meta's broader strategy to offset significant investments in AI infrastructure and prepare for increased efficiency driven by AI-assisted workers.
The AAI unit is tasked with creating tools and evaluations to speed up the development of AI agents designed for complex tasks, including code writing. The ultimate goal is for these agents to handle the majority of product and infrastructure development, with human employees providing oversight.
This initiative follows CEO Mark Zuckerberg's vision that 2026 will be "the year that AI starts to dramatically change the way that we work." Meta is actively investing in AI-native tooling to enhance individual productivity and flatten team structures, a move expected to significantly boost output and the overall work experience.
