Microsoft is developing a 7,000-acre data center campus in Pecos, Texas, with a capacity of 2,500 to 2,595 MW.

Microsoft's exclusivity agreement with Chevron and Engine No. 1 includes a $7 billion natural gas-fired power plant dedicated to this campus, slated for operation around 2027. Initially, it will generate 2,500 MW, with potential for growth.

West Texas's abundant resources and favorable regulatory environment make it an ideal location compared to pricier data center markets like Northern Virginia and Dallas-Fort Worth. This project could transform Pecos, a community of about 12,000, economically.

However, reliance on natural gas may face scrutiny from environmental advocates, contradicting Microsoft's net-zero objectives.
