Spotify co-CEO Alex Norström says the platform's new AI music feature is a superior alternative to AI-generated 'slop' and piracy. The tool, developed in partnership with Universal Music Group, allows premium users to create AI-generated song covers and remixes using music from participating artists. Norström emphasized that the feature is built on 'consent, credit, and compensation' for artists.

While the move aims to create new revenue streams for artists and songwriters beyond royalties, it remains unclear which artists will participate. UMG represents major stars including Taylor Swift, Ariana Grande, and Billie Eilish. UMG Chairman Sir Lucian Grainge called the initiative a 'pioneering AI-enabled superfan initiative' designed to support human artistry.

Critics, including composer and campaigner Ed Newton-Rex, warn that shareable AI remixes could flood the platform, drowning out human artists and pressuring more musicians to opt in. The debate comes as AI-generated songs have already topped music charts, highlighting a growing demand that may further marginalize human artists.
