HELSINKI/STOCKHOLM, April 8 - TikTok plans to invest 1 billion euros to build a second data centre in Finland within a year.

The new facility in Lahti will have an initial capacity of 50 megawatts, scaling to 128 MW. It’s part of TikTok’s 12-billion-euro European data sovereignty initiative, protecting data for over 200 million European users.

This move follows TikTok's recent avoidance of a U.S. ban over data concerns and growing European scrutiny of social media practices. The company currently stores European user data across three facilities in Norway, Ireland, and the U.S.

Finland’s cold climate and low-carbon energy make it attractive for tech firms like Microsoft and Google. However, political concerns arose over TikTok’s first data centre in Kouvola, which lacked transparency.

The mayor of Lahti welcomed the investment, calling it a significant boost for the region.

TikTok aims to complete the second Finnish data centre by 2027.
