Three Tennessee teenagers have filed a federal lawsuit against Elon Musk’s AI venture xAI, accusing the Grok chatbot of generating sexually explicit deepfake images of them without consent. The minors claim Grok altered real photos and videos from school events into explicit content, violating their privacy and safety.
The lawsuit, filed in California, is the first by minors over non-consensual AI-generated sexual imagery on a platform. Two plaintiffs are under 18, though all three remain anonymous. They seek damages and a permanent ban on such image generation.
The complaint alleges xAI knowingly released Grok despite awareness of its potential to create harmful content using minors’ likenesses. A separate investigation led to the arrest of a suspect in December, who was found with similar deepfakes involving students from the same high school.
Despite earlier promotion of a 'spicy' mode feature, Elon Musk stated he was unaware Grok produced nude images of underage individuals. In January, he announced Grok would no longer generate images of girls in bikinis.
