Ukraine has pivoted from territorial defense to a systematic dismantling of Russian logistics through its "Logistics Lockdown" campaign. The strategy relies on deploying swarms of autonomous kamikaze drones capable of striking targets up to 150 kilometers behind front lines.
Central to this effort is the Hornet drone, developed by Swift Beat LLC, a US firm backed by former Google CEO Eric Schmidt. These units cost between $6,000 and $12,000 each but target high-value assets like fuel tankers and rail infrastructure. Their effectiveness stems from an AI terminal guidance system trained on four years of conflict footage, allowing autonomous identification of specific military assets.
Operational tempo has surged significantly. Between February and April 2026, Ukraine’s mid-range strikes quadrupled. This scaling is enabled by Starlink integration, which provides resilient satellite communication links that withstand Russian electronic warfare interference.
The campaign highlights a broader shift in defense technology, where Silicon Valley innovation accelerates development timelines far beyond traditional procurement cycles. By targeting chokepoints in Russia’s supply chain, Ukraine aims to starve forward forces of ammunition and fuel, fundamentally altering the cost calculus of modern warfare.
