WhatsApp has warned around 200 users in Italy about a fake messaging app created by Italian surveillance firm SIO. The app contained government spyware, according to Meta.

The malicious iOS app was developed by SIO, which partners with law enforcement and government agencies. WhatsApp removed affected accounts and urged users to delete the app and reinstall the legitimate version.

This marks the latest in a series of surveillance incidents tied to Italian authorities, including previous deployments of Spyrtacus malware via fake Android apps. Italian media outlets like La Repubblica and ANSA first reported the story.

The repeated use of such tools highlights Italy’s permissive legal framework for lawful interception and weak oversight mechanisms. These conditions allow spyware vendors like SIO to operate with minimal accountability.

WhatsApp plans to take legal action against SIO, continuing Meta’s broader push against commercial spyware firms. However, structural reforms are needed to curb recurring abuses.
