WhatsApp is launching a major privacy feature, allowing users to communicate via usernames instead of phone numbers.
The Meta-owned service announced this week that people can reserve usernames now. The full feature will roll out globally in the coming months.
When users enable a username, they can message contacts and businesses without revealing their phone number. There is no public directory; individuals must know the exact username to make contact.
The platform, with over three billion global users, advises selecting a unique name. A generator tool will provide ideas.
Creators and businesses can link existing Instagram or Facebook usernames to maintain brand consistency across Meta's platforms.
To reserve a username, users must update to the latest app version and navigate to Settings, then Account, then Username.
