As a dangerous heatwave grips the central and eastern United States, a major air conditioning recall has been issued. Daikin Comfort Technologies Manufacturing is recalling more than 13,000 Amana brand units due to a potential fire and burn hazard.

The recall, announced June 25 by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, covers 13,514 window-room and through-the-wall air conditioners and heat pumps. The issue: the heating elements in some models can remain energized even when turned off, creating a fire risk.

The timing is critical. About two-thirds of the U.S. population is expected to face extreme heat over the Fourth of July weekend. Daikin reported no injuries but is aware of one incident involving melting plastic.

The affected white units, sold in apartments, hotels, and commercial spaces from April to December 2025 for $850 to $1,500, include specific model numbers starting with PBH, PBE, AH, and AE.

Consumers should stop using the recalled units immediately. Contact Daikin at 855-812-8989 for a full refund. A photo of the cut power cord and the unit's serial number will be required.
