An Australian executive has admitted to selling valuable U.S. cyber tools to a Russian broker for cryptocurrency. Peter Williams, a U.S. resident and former Australian Air Force staffer, pleaded guilty in Washington to two counts of theft of trade secrets. Prosecutors allege Williams sold eight protected cyber-exploit components, including zero-day capabilities developed for U.S. intelligence and shared with Five Eyes partners.
Williams received over $1.26 million in crypto payments for these sales, with additional payments of up to $4 million promised under ongoing agreements. He allegedly spent over $715,000 on luxury items and a property down payment, and continued selling exploits even after an FBI investigation began.
Prosecutors are seeking a nine-year prison sentence and at least $35 million in restitution, arguing the breach endangered intelligence operations. The case highlights the increasing use of cryptocurrency in national security-adjacent crimes for cross-border value transfer.
