At least 46 people have died in severe floods and landslides that have struck the southeastern Brazilian state of Minas Gerais. Thousands have been displaced as torrential rains caused widespread destruction.

In Juiz de Fora, one resident lost his 11-year-old son when his house collapsed. His wife and daughter are hospitalized. The city's mayor reported at least 20 landslides since Monday evening.

Thousands of families in endangered areas are being relocated to makeshift shelters. Juiz de Fora experienced double its expected rainfall for February. The federal government has expedited relief efforts, sending aid and personnel to the affected region.
