JAKARTA: IPB University has suspended 16 students from its engineering and technology faculty over alleged online sexual harassment. The incident reportedly occurred in 2024 but gained attention following a formal report last week. The university decided on a one-semester suspension for the students involved, effective April 17.

The case came to light after screenshots of a private chat group, allegedly involving IPB University students, circulated on social media. The messages reportedly contained sexually explicit language and ranked women based on perceived attractiveness. The group allegedly also involved attempts to silence victims and normalize inappropriate behavior.

IPB University's dean of the engineering and technology faculty, Slamet Budijanto, stated that an investigation confirmed the involvement of the 16 students. He emphasized that the university does not tolerate sexual violence and aims for the suspension to deter future misconduct. The university also pledged to prioritize the protection and recovery of victims, offering psychological assistance and ensuring safe spaces.

According to the university's Student Executive Board President, Muhammad Abdan Rofi, the incident initially occurred in 2024 and was resolved internally. However, it resurfaced following a high-profile sexual harassment case at the University of Indonesia, which involved similar chat group dynamics.

Lawmakers in Indonesia are urging stricter campus safeguards against sexual harassment in light of these recent incidents, calling for enhanced prevention and response mechanisms.
