Amanda Lathlin, the first First Nations woman elected to Manitoba’s legislature, has been honored following her passing after a battle with illness.

Premier Wab Kinew led the tribute in the Manitoba legislature, singing an honor song and praising Lathlin as a trailblazer. He highlighted her work advancing supports for victims of sexual violence and compassionate leave for workers experiencing miscarriages.

Flowers, a Manitoba flag, and a book of condolences were placed at her empty desk. Her father, Oscar Lathlin, was a former NDP cabinet minister who died in office in 2008.

Lathlin, elected in 2015, had taken a leave of absence weeks before her death. Question period was canceled, and family members attended the ceremony.
