A man armed with a shotgun was shot and killed by US Secret Service agents early Sunday after he breached a secure perimeter at President Donald Trump's Mar-a-Lago resort in West Palm Beach, Florida.

The incident occurred around 1:30 a.m. EST when the man, described as being in his early 20s and carrying a shotgun and a fuel can, was observed at the resort's north gate.

Secret Service agents and a Palm Beach County Sheriff's deputy confronted the armed individual. After complying with an order to drop the fuel can, the man raised the shotgun to a shooting position, leading law enforcement to open fire. He was pronounced dead at the scene. No officers were injured.

The FBI has taken over the investigation into the motive behind the breach. President Trump was not at the resort at the time of the incident.
