The son of jailed former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro has been convicted by Brazil's highest court of pursuing US intervention during his father's coup trial. Eduardo Bolsonaro, 41, was sentenced in absentia to four years and two months in prison for lobbying US authorities to impose tariffs or sanctions on Brazil.
A former congressman, Eduardo relocated to the US in 2025 before his father was found guilty of plotting a military coup and given a 27-year sentence. Writing on social media, he called the conviction "baseless and senseless," claiming a lack of due process. He previously told the BBC he was living in "exile" fearing arrest if he returned.
The younger Bolsonaro publicly lobbied the Trump administration for support. US President Donald Trump later imposed a 50% tariff on Brazil, a move current president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva called "illogical." The US has since withdrawn sanctions it had placed on Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes over his handling of Bolsonaro-related cases.
