Amazon’s carbon footprint grew by 16% in 2025, a sharp acceleration from the 6% rise reported in 2024. The increase is fueled by an aggressive data center expansion to meet surging artificial intelligence demand.
The company’s operations consumed 2.5 billion gallons of water, though efficiency at directly owned sites improved slightly. Amazon has earmarked approximately $150 billion for data center investments over the next 15 years. The primary drivers of emissions growth remain data center construction and fuel consumption from its massive delivery fleet.
Amazon maintains its commitment to net-zero carbon emissions by 2040 and has already matched 100% of its electricity use with renewable energy purchases. However, shareholders have filed resolutions demanding more detailed climate strategy disclosures.
