Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney is undertaking a significant trade mission to Asia, aiming to forge new international partnerships and lessen Canada's dependence on the United States. The Prime Minister stated that in an increasingly uncertain global landscape, Canada must focus on controllable elements, such as building new alliances to enhance domestic certainty, security, and prosperity.

The trip, beginning in India, will also include stops in Australia and Japan. Carney has expressed concerns about the fading US-led global order and the economic impact of tariffs imposed by the Trump administration. Canada aims to more than double its bilateral trade with India, targeting CAN$70 billion by 2030. However, discussions with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi will also address the strained diplomatic relations stemming from allegations regarding a 2023 activist killing.
