Eight Muslim-majority countries have strongly condemned Israel's new death penalty law targeting Palestinians convicted of deadly attacks.

Pakistan, Turkey, Egypt, Indonesia, Jordan, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates issued a joint statement opposing the legislation passed Monday by Israel's parliament.

The law makes death by hanging the default sentence for Palestinians convicted in military courts of murdering Israelis. Courts retain discretion in special circumstances.

West Bank military courts exclusively try Palestinians and would now automatically impose capital punishment under the new measure.

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas called the legislation a breach of international law designed to intimidate Palestinians.

The UK, Germany, France and Italy declared the move de facto discriminatory, saying Israel risks undermining democratic principles.

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez called it another step toward apartheid. The Palestinian foreign ministry labeled it institutionalized extrajudicial killings based on racist standards.
