A great white shark was recorded on underwater video in the Mediterranean Sea, a rare event experts call unprecedented.
Derk Remmers, a volunteer diver with Ghost Diving, captured the footage during a mission in the Strait of Sicily. He was working to remove abandoned fishing nets with the Healthy Seas foundation.
"Statistically, it is way more likely to win the lotto jackpot than to meet such an iconic animal underwater," Remmers said.
The Mediterranean is a known habitat for great whites, but sightings are extremely rare. The International Union for Conservation of Nature lists the species as critically endangered in the region since 2016.
