Iran carried out the execution of at least two individuals connected to January protests and the ongoing conflict, as a Tehran court handed death sentences to four others for the killing of a Basij-linked student during the 2022 protests.
Abbas Akbari Feyzabadi was hanged after conviction on charges including 'enmity against God' and destruction of public property for his role in attacks on a governor's office during protests in January, sparked by hyperinflation and rising costs.
Separately, Mojtaba Kian was executed Sunday on espionage charges for passing information about Iran's defense industries to Israel and the US. According to Iran Human Rights, Kian was the first person arrested since the war began in late February to be executed.
In the Ekbatan Town case, four defendants-Milad Armoon, Navid Najjaran, Mehdi Imani, and Seyed Mohammadmehdi Hosseini-were sentenced to death by Tehran's Revolutionary Court for 'corruption on Earth' over the 2022 killing of Basij-affiliated student Arman Aliverdi. Four others received five-year prison terms.
UN High Commissioner Volker Türk expressed alarm, saying the rights of Iranians are being 'harshly and violently stripped away.' Amnesty International cited concerns over 'grossly unfair trials.'
