Iran executed Mehrab Abdollahzadeh on Sunday, a 29-year-old detained during the 2022 'Woman, Life, Freedom' protests. He was convicted of 'corruption on earth' for the killing of a Basij paramilitary member. Human rights groups say he was tortured into a false confession and was not at the scene.
The execution follows those of Yaghoub Karimpour and Nasser Bakerzadeh on Saturday, accused of spying for Israel. Sassan Azadwar Junghani, a 21-year-old karate champion detained during January protests, was also executed last week.
Iran's judiciary has accelerated executions under pretext of war conditions. The UN reports at least 21 executions and 4,000 detentions since February 28. UN Human Rights Chief Volker Turk condemned the violence, as Tehran vows not to relent in punishing those it considers criminals.
