Militaries are increasingly leveraging insecure, internet-connected consumer security cameras as a potent surveillance tool, offering eyes on the ground at minimal cost. Research indicates Iranian state-linked hackers have targeted hundreds of consumer-grade cameras in the Middle East, potentially to assess damage and plan strikes.

This tactic mirrors reports of Israeli forces accessing traffic cameras in Tehran and Ukrainian officials warning of Russian camera hacks for intelligence gathering. Both sides in the Ukraine conflict have reportedly exploited camera networks for reconnaissance and targeting.

Experts note that hacking civilian cameras provides direct visibility, often with better resolution than satellites or drones, and is significantly cheaper and stealthier. Vulnerabilities in common camera brands like Hikvision and Dahua persist due to owners failing to update software. The lack of clear accountability for compromised devices suggests this trend will continue in future conflicts.
