A crime reporter was gunned down in Mexico’s Veracruz state on Thursday, hours before the nation hosted the opening match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Luis Ángel López Valdez, a reporter for Vanguardia de Veracruz, was killed in Poza Rica after his vehicle was intercepted by armed individuals. Reports indicate he had received prior threats.

The University of Guadalajara's Observatory on Freedom of Expression condemned the murder as a severe attack on press freedom, warning that such violence undermines democracy. This incident follows the January killing of another Veracruz journalist, Carlos Castro, whose protection was reportedly withdrawn.

Mexico remains one of the world’s most dangerous countries for journalists. According to Reporters Without Borders, more than 150 reporters have been murdered since 2000. The tragedy unfolds amid heightened security for the tournament, where Mexico defeated South Africa 2-0 at Estadio Azteca.
