Kenyan authorities have charged Festus Arasa Omwamba, head of Global Faces Human Resources, with luring 22 young men to Russia under false pretenses. Prosecutors allege Omwamba exploited these individuals by deception, intending for them to fight in the Ukraine war. The victims were reportedly promised job opportunities but instead faced combat roles. While 22 were rescued in Kenya before departure, three others had already been sent to Russia and returned injured. A report from Kenya's National Intelligence Service indicates up to 1,000 Kenyans may have been recruited to fight for Russia.
Omwamba, 33, pleaded not guilty to the charges. The case has exposed a network of alleged collusion between rogue officials and human trafficking syndicates. Victims reported signing contracts with overseas agencies, incurring significant debt for travel and visas. Upon arrival in Russia, many allegedly faced minimal training before being deployed to front-line combat. The Russian embassy in Nairobi denies recruiting Kenyans, stating Russian law permits legal foreign residents to enlist voluntarily. Ukraine reports over 1,700 Africans recruited to fight for Russia.
