A major Russian missile and drone assault struck Ukraine's capital, Kyiv, overnight, killing at least eight people and leaving dozens wounded.

Officials report a residential building in the Podilskyi district partially collapsed. Several multistory buildings in the Darnytsia district were also damaged, with people believed trapped under the rubble.

"These are residential buildings. Places where people slept," said Tymur Tkachenko, head of Kyiv's City Military Administration.

The attack, which was still underway early Monday, is the second major strike on the capital in less than a week. It underscores the war's expanding reach four years after Russia's full-scale invasion began.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy had warned of the incoming assault and renewed calls for Western allies to supply more Patriot air defense missiles to counter ongoing Russian aggression.
