A powerful 7.5 magnitude earthquake struck northern Japan on Monday, April 20, 2026. The Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) issued tsunami warnings for waves up to three meters along the coasts of Iwate, Aomori, and Hokkaido prefectures.

The seismic event occurred in Pacific waters off the coast of Iwate prefecture at 4:53 PM local time. The earthquake's epicenter was approximately 10 kilometers deep. Shaking from the tremor was significant enough to be felt in Tokyo, hundreds of kilometers away, causing large buildings to sway.
