Prime Minister Mark Carney and Alberta Premier Danielle Smith will hold a joint announcement in Calgary on Friday, unveiling the next phase of their landmark energy pact. The deal will include an industrial carbon pricing implementation agreement and aims to advance a potential new pipeline to the British Columbia coast.

A source said the expected price is $130 per tonne by 2040. Last year, Alberta froze its price at $95 per tonne.
Both leaders declined further details, but Smith told the provincial legislature the announcement marks another step toward resetting Alberta's relationship with Ottawa. The 2025 memorandum of understanding commits both governments to building a bitumen pipeline to the West Coast.

The agreement also requires Ottawa to treat all provinces equally under federal carbon pricing, following a 2021 court ruling.
