A miner in Mexico has been saved in an "astonishing rescue" after spending nearly two weeks trapped underground, officials reported.
A dam breach caused by a structural failure flooded the El Rosario mine in the northern Mexican state of Sinaloa on March 25, trapping Francisco Zapata Nájera and three co-workers. Zapata Nájera was located by divers, but rescue teams reached him after 21 hours of navigating heavily flooded areas.
Of the 25 miners present during the accident, 21 escaped immediately. Rescuers later pulled one survivor from a depth of 985 feet. President Claudia Sheinbaum stated that another miner has been found dead and one remains missing.
Zapata Nájera's condition was stabilized, and he was transported by helicopter to a hospital for specialist treatment.
